Welcome to LoullyMakes
- an online emporium of meaningful accessories, lovingly handmade in Scotland.
Let me say "Hello!" and introduce myself - I am Louise Nicolson ( aka Loully, to friends ! )
Originally taught to sew at home by my Mum, pattern, print and texture have remained the enduring focus of my creativity, and since graduating from the Scottish College of Textiles, I have relished a spectrum of retail experience from youthful days with Liberty of London, to the ongoing successes of our family-run Highlandwear business, Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers.
Inspired with such glorious traditional fabrics at my fingertips, LoullyMakes was borne from a combined need to utilise our kiltmaking remnants, reduce waste and to let creative ideas become reality.
Here I offer a focused range of beautiful, useful pieces that I love to wear myself and to have around me, day-to day.
Each simply constructed design is the result of my own insight and development. Each item is carefully handmade by our small, skilled team, here in Scotland.
Select individual pieces are available from our family business, Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers and on occasion you can also find me selling from Artisan Fairs or a "Pop-Up Shop". #GNKfamily

John Muir was a man of many talents; farmer, naturalist, botanist, inventor, explorer, mountaineer, writer – but is best known as a pioneer of nature conservation.
Muir was born in the coastal town of Dunbar, East Lothian on 21st April 1838. During his childhood in Scotland, he developed a deep love of the natural world, which grew into a lifelong cause, earning worldwide recognition.
April 2014 marked the centenary of Muirs death and the opening of the 215km celebratory John Muir Way. The trail stretches from his East Coast birthplace, through coastal, country and urban central Scotland, to Helensburgh on the West coast- the Muir familys departure point on their emigration to North America.
Gordon Nicolsons tartan design to honour Muir was inspired by ” the Father of the National parks” legacy, and by the stunning coastline, countryside & Lammermuir hills which surround Dunbar, where Gordon lives with his family.
The colours woven represent;
Green & Brown – earthy nature
Blue – the sea & sky
Red – from the Dunbar tartan
The John Muir Way Tartan is approved by Scottish Natural Heritage, and is Registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans.
John Muir Way tartan is woven by Lochcarron of Scotland.
“A modern masterpiece of production, Tana Lawn™ cotton is the perfect canvas to display Liberty Fabrics’ most iconic prints. This is a cotton that behaves like silk – ultra-fine, with a fluid hand-feel and intense depth of colour that is truly unmatchable. An everyday marvel of a dress material, Tana is soft yet durable, cooling yet warming, and even machine washable.”
